FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Crown?

Also known as a "cap", a crown is a durable covering for a damaged tooth or for a tooth that needs imporved esthetics and/or funtionality. Crowns can be made from a range of materials such as:

  • Ceramic: These crowns are commonly used for front teeth and are favored for their ability to match the color of natural teeth seamlessly. They are metal-free, making them a good option for those with metal allergies or those seeking a more natural-looking restoration. While not as strong as metal crowns, they are sufficiently durable for the biting forces of the front teeth.
  • Porcelain Fused to Metal: These crowns combine the aesthetic benefits of porcelain with the strength of a metal base. The porcelain can be color-matched to natural teeth, but the underlying metal can sometimes show through as a dark line at the gumline, which can be a cosmetic concern. Despite this, they are known for their durability and are often used for both front and back teeth.
  • Gold: Gold crowns are highly durable and resistant to wear and tear. They require less tooth removal compared to other types of crowns, preserving more of the natural tooth structure. Gold crowns are biocompatible, meaning they are unlikely to cause allergic reactions, and they provide a precise fit, reducing the risk of future complications.
What can I expect from a crown procedure?

We first prepare the tooth/teeth are prepared so that the future crown can fit on the tooth and still look esthetically pleasant. We then take a detailed impression to ensure that the crown form is precisely fitted to your individual tooth for maximum comfort and to maintain your bite. While your permanent crown is fabricated in our dental lab, we use a temporary crown. Finally, the permanent crown is placed securely on the tooth.

What is a bridge?

Simply put, a bridge is an artificial tooth that is meant to cover the gap caused by a missing tooth or teeth. A bridge connects to the closest adjacent natural teeth using crowns that hold the artificial tooth or teeth in place.

Why do I need a bridge?

There are many reasons for a patient to need a bridge, and we will work with you to determine the best restorative treatment option for your specific dental needs. We recommend bridges to patients who have experienced tooth loss and want to reclaim:

  • Functionality - Tooth loss compromises your ability to complete simple tasks we perform daily such as eating, drinking, and even speaking.
  • A flawless smile - With a bridge your smile will be full, showing no evidence of tooth loss.
  • Comfort - Our high-quality bridges are designed to deliver comfort and functionality.
